Therapeutic Stories

Using the Magic Mirror of Metaphor to Build Resiliency of Ukrainian Refugee Children and Families

Didi Devapriya, president of AMURTEL
with Susan Perrow at her home in Australia

AMURTEL together with the internationally renowned therapeutic story writer and storyteller Susan Perrow, has produced a collection of therapeutic stories designed to help Ukrainian children that have been displaced by the war to deal with the disruptions they are experiencing in healthy, resilient ways.

What are Therapeutic Stories?

"Therapeutic stories are a healing medium that allow children, teenagers and adults to embark on an imaginative journey, rather than being lectured or directly addressed about the issue. By identifying with the main character or characters, the listener is empowered as obstacles are overcome and a resolution achieved. This is a gentle, easy, yet often effective means of addressing challenging behaviours and difficult situations.

As medicine is used to help restore wholeness or balance to out-of-balance physical conditions, story medicine (therapeutic or healing stories) can be an imaginative and effective pedagogical strategy. Story medicine uses metaphor and story as an indirect tool for regulation of behaviour and helping with trauma through individual and group work.

Working with a creative journey and a specific selection of metaphors, a therapeutic story approach has the potential to shift an out-of-balance behaviour or situation back towards wholeness or balance. The story may help considerably, help a little, soothe, motivate, strengthen resolve and/or sow invaluable seeds for future change."

The books are available for free, in English, Ukrainian and Russian, thanks to generous funding from CARE-SERA.

The Song of the Nightingales

This is a collection of thirteen therapeutic stories written by authors Didi Ananda Devapriya and Susan Perrow, as well as two other authors that granted permission to use their versions of traditional folktales, David Holt and Rafe Martin.
The stories gathered together in this collection were selected with great care, love and respect for the determination of the Ukrainians I have met to overcome the hardships of war and build a better future. Therapeutic stories use the magical power of metaphor to bring the light of hope, optimism and healing even after the most difficult circumstances.

Rays of Light in the Storm

This collection of original stories was produced by Ukrainian women who participated in Susan Perrow’s therapeutic story writing workshop. Each story shines a ray of light and hope in the midst of stormy times. The women’s stories use metaphors to describe their own journeys or those of loved ones, as they struggle through moments of fear and despair to regain hope, inspiration and light.
